Tips to reduce photo size for uploads

I usually use Photoshop Element to process photos, but it's not a free software. I also have a free photo editor: Photoscape, which you can download from the internet.

I tried the following procedure with Photoscape to save jpeg files to smaller jpeg files:
  1. Start Photoscape
  2. Click Batch Editor
  3. Select the photos that you want to downsize and move them to the main panel. (You shall see the file names listed on the top panel.)
  4. Do not change anything (unless you want to do more editing) and click "Convert All"
  5. Set where and in what names the new files will be saved, select JPEG Quality (70 is still adequate for web viewing), and click "Save".
[Thanks to Shingmin for the tip!]

4. after it finished, it will have a sildeshow preview.  On the right you will see "embed" under facebook and email icons.

5. click it, select all (ctrl+A), copy and paste.

6. go to SJCCC article post, we have to paste the embed link.  The code I am using below is just a sample.
     - Change width to 595, height to 497. (yellow highlight section)
     - delete blue highlight section

    Web: Joomla "Prev/Next" Navigation setting

We have the "Navigation" turned on in Joomla by default, which means at the bottom of the article, Joomla automatically provides <Prev> and <Prev> (or in Chinese <前一個> and <下一個>).  This is a very useful feature for the users to navigate to another article after reading the current one.  This is also useful to automatically provide internal links for search engine.
This is done by setting the Navigation in Article Manager->Parameters to Show, and by setting the Navigation in all the menu items to Use Global.

    Question:

Sometime, this automatic navigation in Joomla does not make sense. For example, this page: http://sjccc.org/index.php/finance.html should point to earlier finance report instead of next community announcement.  What do you suggest?

    Answer:
This "<Prev> and <Prev>" feature basically go to the prev/next article in a Category, so if you group all the financial articles into a category, then it would behave like what you'd like.

If you would like to turn this particular one off, since it's a menu item, you can select "Menus" on the top, and pick "團體". edit the article '財務 Finance', on the right rail, click "Parameters (Component)", and change "Show Navigation" from "Use Global" to "Hide", and Save.

10/23 Saturday Watermark Potluck and Parent Group Workshop

    Dear Watermark Parents,

Please be reminded that this Saturday, 10/23, the Watermark parents will have a potluck with the Watermark teens and young adults from 6 PM to 7:15PM at the lower church.

Afterwards, the parents will regroup in room 2 for the workshop from 7:30 PM to 10 PM.  The topic will be
"Understand our kids and the popular culture they live in", our panel speakers include 潘齊家, 陳莉娜, 張永錦, Patrick Ku, and Helena Geefay.  Facilitator will be 谷偉業.  Some discussion questions include:
    • What are the characteristics of the popular culture?
    • When our kids addict to computer games or internet, what/how shall we react?
    • When our kids have different views with us (dating, moral value), what should we do?
    • When our kids do not agree with Church teaching or drift away from faith, what shall we do?
    • How can we create a right atmosphere so that our kids are willing to communicate with us?
Thank you very much for your participation and support.  Look forward to seeing all of you Saturday.

    Blessings,
    Amy, JunFen, and Wendar

    Uploading SJCCC pictures

Our current plan is to leverage external services like Picasa to share community pictures.  This enable us to leverage the very nice state of the art features without a lot of infrastructure, and it allows the members to help and participate in the process.

How to Upload Pictures to the SJCCC website:
    • Go to:  http://picasaweb.google.com/home
    • Log in as:  sjccc2011c@gmail.com (changes depending on the year, contact webteam @ sjccc.org for password)
    • Please create a folder in a the format yyyy-mm-dd-EventName, for example: 2010-02-28-Lantern-Festival-[your-name]
    • Please set the privacy to "Unlisted"
    • Please upload pictures at 1600 or 1024 pix, I think that resolution should be sufficient.
    • When you are done, send a message to  webteam @ sjccc and we will link the album to the sjccc website
Please feel free to contact us if there are any issues.

8/1/2013: Tony: If Google redirects you from picasaweb to google plus, please use the following URL since google plus does not support slideshow of photo albums yet.

    eNews to SJCCC Members

    Dear Chair Board,
Would you please use the alias "enews @ sjccc.org" when you want to send an email to the SJCCC Community? This way, Xiuli and I can handle the request without duplicating efforts/emails.

We now have close to 600 people in the email list now. We need to respect people's email rights as they are our family in Christ, and we also don't want to get into problem legally (there are government SPAM regulation) and with the Internet Service Providers (they don't deliver our emails if they see a lot of complains). After moving to the current ISP earlier this year, things are much better now, and our emails are being delivered.
    Here are some best practices/Suggestions:
    • Please send us a subject line in English (Chinese do not display consistently in subject line)
    • Please only send information that is directly related to SJCCC and of interest to most of the people
    • Please address the community and sign your letter. We are not to WRITE the email for you, we are delivering. Think of yourself as the Shepard addressing your sheep. We are just your mailmen, mailmen don't write anything for you. :)
    • If possible, please have both English and Chinese in the text. Many people can't read Chinese email (all Youth/most YAG, many older computers, and blackberries), and some people can't read English email (less).
    • It's not good to have attachments, we can upload your attachments and send URL to it.
    • Usually, try to avoid sending multiple emails per day to the community (our previous stated preference was 1-2 per week). We sent 4 emails in the last 2 days, and we see people unsubscribe when the volume goes up since some people may be annoyed. With this alias, we can try to regulate the flow to avoid this.
Thank you for your work for Christ and for the Community.

May God bless us to do His will,
    +Tony
