Handing out Spiritual Bookmarks at Asian American Expo in San Mateo this weekend/KerChing

Thanks to the effort of Albert and Lucia, we now have 1000 beautiful bookmarks in three colorful designs. Albert has been working on this out of his busy schedule at work and at home. Lucia's timely help in art design is particularly generous for she has two young children and has to take of her dad's medical need plus they have a renovation project ongoing in the house. However we had fun exchanging ideas and it is a blessing to work together. If you remember the prototype presented just a week ago, then you can tell they did an amazing job from what they have finished today.

We are going to hand out these bookmarks at Asian American Expo in San Mateo over the weekend. It is going to be exciting and I am looking forward to it. However this weekend is more or less a pilot run for we really don't have too many bookmarks (see #2 below for reason) considering the huge attendance.

1. Please let me know if you want to join the fun and effort.

Sorry for the short notice. Lucia worked at the print shop till yesterday evening to finalize the design after many iterations and corrections. Before then, I was not sure if we can make it.

2. We need donations big and small.

Due to the fast turnaround time we needed this time, we had to pay a premium for these bookmarks. The final unit cost is close to $0.60 per bookmark, not cheap, and almost 3 times of what we originally anticipated. So please treat them with care. Furthermore, cost of this 1000 bookmarks will have to be paid with whatever the donation I can get. Since SJCCC has committed $2K covering a major part of our budget of $2.6K for three major events in the summer of 2007, we are still $600 short. Breakdown of our $2.6K budget is as follows.

6/16-17: Asian American Expo: $600 (after tax) bookmarks
7/21-22: Taiwanese & Chinese American Athletic Tournament: $500 bookmarks + $500 booth
8/11-12: Northern California Chinese Athletic Federation: $500 bookmarks + $500 booth
3. For the next batch, since we will have longer lead time, we should not have to pay the fast-turnaround premium as we did this time and hopefully the unit cost will be driven down significantly. However both cost and quality should be taken into account when working out with a vendor.
4. Ken suggests we hand out bookmarks to people leaving the expo ground, not those arriving. It is a good idea. See, your inputs are very helpful to us and we need your participation and prayer.
5. Expo info

Place:

San Mateo Expo Center

2495 S. Delaware St.

Thanks be to God.

P.S. I will get finished bookmarks around 11am Saturday and plan to be there around noon.

Hi Li Peng, Cris and Bettina,
Thanks for attending this meeting. We are very appreciated your help and ideas.

Cris,
Thanks for helping out to recruit new member(s) for our group.

To all,
BTW, the Vietnamese group in Sunnyvale belongs to the parish. The Vietnamese mass offered in Sunnyvale is started by a Vietnamese father. San Jose has a total of 6 parishes that offer Vietnamese masses.

The Korean Catholic Mission of San Jose does not offer any other languages, only Korean. Their website is http://www.sjkoreancatholic.org

Their altar picture is also attached. We tried to call, but the person who answered, does not speak English. I will have some of my Korean friends to translate some of the contents in the website.

Regards,
Joe Tang

Re: Handing out Spiritual Bookmarks at Asian American Expo in San Mateo this weekend/KerChing

Just got back from the Expo. Here is my brief report.

1. Teresa Niou went with me but we had to come back for more cloth. The temperature was about 10 degree lower than Palo Alto.

2. 500 were handed out during peak time in the afternoon and it is actually very easy to pass out the St Francis Prayer.

3. There are some very encouraging comments such as "this is very good" and "I have heard of Saint Francis" and so on.

4. When leaving I drove around the parking lot and picked up about 15 that were threw away. I am very pleased to reclaim those.

5. St Francis prayer is a great choice. The barrier is just lower. Passing them out, I just said "Could I give you a Peace Prayer bookmark?".

Thanks be to God. It went extremely well. Thank you so much for your prayer.

P.S. I am ready for a good dinner now. :)

Thank you for your support/Kerching

Dear Kai-Min, Li-Peng, and Tony,
Thank you for your support during the meeting last night. There are always so many important issues to discuss in our Council meetings and we appreciate the invitation. I did not have the chance to elaborate on some of the issues but your comments were of timely help.
Regarding the booth, although costly, it does offer a better forum for personal conversation which is important when engaging a person. Passing out flyers will not be very likely to get us such opportunity. Thanks to the support of the Council, with a budget of $2000 granted for the three upcoming events in the summer of 2007, we are now able to consider getting a booth on top of other expenditure such as bookmark printing.
As shown in our plan presented in May, there is a lineup of major Chinese American events held in different seasons in which we would like to be present. We will show our commitment to receive Council's continuous support just as much as we need Council's continuous support to get our mission going.
In Christ,
Kerching

Faith as our fundation --actions (Ana)

Dear brothers and sisters:
Thanks for coming to the kick off meeting, after the first meeting Li-peng and I spent sometime to revisit the sub-theme under " Faith as our foundation" and we take some actions, they are:
A>We invited the coordinator for each sug-group ( we are so grateful that they accepted the invitation to be our partners):
#8 is related to SH school, Ah Khong will be the coordinator (both in English and Mandarin Group), Ah Khong will decide who is going to help him to coordinate the English group.
#7 is related to Liturgy: Margarita will be the coordinator for Mandarin group and Joanne will be the coordinator for English group.
#6 is related to the faith formation: Tian Bao will be the coordinator for Mandarin group and Albert will be the coordinator for the Young adult and English group.
B> We proposed the focus in this summer are:
1. to identify how much resources we have in each subgroup.
2 to identify what are the desires in each subgroup.
3. based on the resources we have to prioritize the desires
C>We suggested to proceed the steps listed in below to facilitais the process:
The coordinator in each subgroup will revisit the prelim roster based on the hard copy given to them to ensure all the sign up person are included, then hold a meeting to gather all the people who are willing to support in a certain theme, the subjects to be discussed in the meeting are:
1 What kind support you think you can provide?
(Since each one have their own meaning of "support", in this exercise we know how much resources is available in this sub group).
2 Propose a desire list that you think it can benefit or nourish our community/individual spiritual life.
3 Prioritize the desire listing based on the resources conclude in #1.
4. How can you help to achieve the desire? like: connection....?
D> Our goal is to build up a faith community:
As Li-peng always say, during this process our main goal is to build up a "community"; in there, we can share our faith, our dream, our happiness and our frustration; in there we can grow while we are in service. ---> each group can sense the unity and love in supporting each other; we hope this kind support can smooth out the burden we have in our mission.
F> We respect the gift given by Holy Spirit to each coordinator.
Each group coordinator can use their gift to serve their group, unless the focus is wrong.
However, Li-peng will attend some of the sub group meetings to get the feeling of this process.
In my trip to Taiwan, I'll see if I can find some support to facilitate the growth in our community and individual spiritual life. please pray for me and see you after summer.
Li-peng: Please feel free to correct it if I miss any thing!

In Christ,
Ana

Passion team - update 2007-06-11 (Ker-Ching)

Dear all,

Passion Team is consisted of three sub-teams:

1. Service Team (Team #9): Internal service

2. Outreach Team (Team #10): External service

3. Evangelization Team (Team #11)

based on 20/20 survey and terminology.

Here is my update.
Service Team:
Hai Hsia is on the right track with the annoucement placed in the weekly. I'll check with her for an update before Council meeting this Thursday and continue to respect her leadership in Service Team.
Outreach Team:
From many recent discussions I had within the community, many members recognize that providing assistance is one of the most effective way to reach out and evangelize. We need a coordinator for Outreach Team so that Evangelization Team and Outreach Team start working hand in hand. Is there anyone of you who is willing to become the coordinator/convener 召集人 of the Outreach Team? All of you are well respected in our community. Please let me know if this fits your ministry or has been in your thought. We need a coordinator/convener 召集人 to get started. The role of the person is to form a team. It is the team that will take care of the execution. What the coordinator 召集人 needs to do for Outreach Team at this time is to get people together.
Evangelization Team:
We had a fruitful monthly meeting last Friday. As a group, we decided that bookmark is a better format as opposed to flyers. Albert put together a few nice prototypes and many of us provided valuable feedback. Albert, Lucia, and myself will finalize the bookmark design and visit the print shop this week. Hopefully we will be ready for the Expo. Lucia's timely assistance during their renovation project is especially generous. I am planning to call a community-wide meeting soon.
Here is the schedule of some events good for evangelization.
6/16-17: Asian American Expo 華人工商大展 (too short a notice, so we will try our best with whatever we got to date)
7/21-22: Taiwanese & Chinese American Athletic Tournament 華人運動會
8/11-12: Northern California Chinese Athletic Federation 華人體育會
Have a nice and Godly day,
Kerching

Passion team - update 2007-06-05 (Kerching)

Dear all,
Thank you for your support. Here is the update for I want to keep you posted.
#9 Service
Hai Hsia is posting an ad in SJCCC Weekly in order to find out what services are needed by members in our community. This ad will run for a period of time so that the message is conveyed to as many as possible. The idea behind this ad is that needs should be identified by the community, not by the few in Passion Team. Once needs are identified, volunteers will be recruited to address those needs.
#10 Outreach
This is being re-evaluated at this time.
#11 Evangelization
Northwest Region will hold its 2nd monthly meeting to review status of its mission after our faith sharing this Friday. We are in communication with sister communities in Fremont and San Mateo to see how we can work together. 華人工商大展 will be held on June 16 & 17 in San Mateo. Hopefully we will be present with whatever the preparation we've got to date. We'd like to stay focused on this mission initially.
Note 1: Per SJCCC Chairperson's request, coordinators of each of the 4 main areas will report status in Council meeting on June 14.
Note 2: Some of you have concerns that I don't know how to elaborate here. Since we are all volunteers, personal decisions are fully respected. To do or not to do? As long as your decision draws you closer to Jesus and His peace, it is the right one, in my humble opinion.
Send me an email or give me a buzz whenever you got some feedback. I want to learn from each one of you.

Let's have some fun in Christ.

Community/Community Prayer (English)

20/20 Team Member During the 2007 SJCCC BBQ

Dear Father in Heaven,

Thank you for giving us this wonderful family, this church community, for us to grow in our faith and to walk our spiritual journey. Thank you for blessing us with this wonderful gathering.

Dear Lord, We are here to celebrate, and together we offer to you all the hard work each of us has done in your Name, for you, and for your people. Please receive the work we have done, please receive every prayer we have in our hearts, every smile we gave to one another, every word we said, every eMail we wrote, every seed that we have sown, and everything that we have done for you, please receive and accept with your Fatherly love, please bless them to bear fruits for you one hundred fold.

Dear God, we pray that you receive the hard work of the CM and Chinese school teachers and administrators of our community. They gave their hearts to the Youth. The Youth is our future. Please bless them with abundant joy, your everlasting joy that no one can take away. Please bless them and their families as they continue to lead and grow our future generation.

Dear Jesus, we pray that you bless our community leaders, Kai Min our chairman, our fearless leader for the last 4 years, our vice-chairpersons, our council, all servant-leaders of the Mandarin, Cantonese, and the English communities. We thank you and praise you, and may all glory be with you always.

Faith is our foundation team update (Tony)

Dear Kai Min,
Just a quick update. The meeting went well yesterday. Several people agreed to take over as the coordinators for the sub groups (6=faith,7=liturgy,8=school) and they will organize subgroup meeting over the next 4-6 weeks.
  • Group 6: Ana (will be out in July), Li-Peng, Albert Wu, they will also get help from Lighthouse (Mon-chi), Watermark (Steve Chu), Cornerstone/Lighthouse 2 (TBD)
  • Group 7: Margarita and Joanne
  • Group 8: Ah Khong and John Khong
This is potentially a big/important group that could tie together the Bible study groups, Liturgy (English and Chinese), and (School). It is interesting that the self-re-organization seems to be happening by itself. Amazing work of God.

God bless,
+Tony

End of SJCCC 20/20, Beginning of Community Action

Today, at the Mass, I made the announcement that the SJCCC 20/20 project is officially over, and we now move into the Community Action Phase.

We have made several recommendations and the SJCCC Council has accepted and moved forward with these recommendations.

#1. The Mission of SJCCC is being updated by James Hua and team, the update will be rectified by the community.

#2. The 11 community goals have been grouped into 4 themes, and 4 groups of people have begun organizing the teams. I am thinking about using this blog to document the progress.

The 4 teams are:
  1. The Church is our Home: Eddie is the lead
  2. The Youth is our Future: Isabel is the lead
  3. The Faith is our Foundation: Ana/Li-Peng are co-leading
  4. The Service, Outreach, and Evangilization are our Passion: Ker-Ching is the lead
Today, we had the first group meeting for the Faith group. It was a very blessed meeting. 3 additional groups will be formed and followed up during the next 4-6 weeks:
1. Li-Peng, Ana, Chris will focus on item #6 - integrating Faith and life
2. Margarita and Joanne will focus on item #7 - liturgy and liturgy leaders
3. Ah Khong and John Khong will focus on item #8 - Sacred Heart School - CM and Chinese programs

My hope is that we will take these programs forward with these and other passionate servants of God. May God bless and lead us to do His will and to glorify His name!

PS, I plan to use this blog for more personal, ministry related blogs; and use blessed-family.org for more general, family, faith sharing blogs.

Faith is our foundation, Invitation by Ana

Dear All:
Peace!
I just learned that Tijuana team is going to have a weekly meeting in the small room in the lower church; at this time, I am not sure whether I can find another meeting place, but let's still meet at lower church, in front of the small room; I'll find out tomorrow whether we can find a place to meet.
Let's pray for this!
Ah Khong:
Do you think we can borrow one of the CCD class room in the school for the meeting? or some place in the school? like hallway? pls call me at 650-565-8960 and let me know.

God Bless!

Dear brothers and sisters:
Peace.....!!
With God's Grace, you have shown your interest to support this theme in the 20/20 survey; may I invite you to be in our initiative kick out meeting? in this first gathering we will have a brain storming to see how we are going to approach in these themes. Just for a reminder, we have 3 themes in this group, however the one in the top 3 priority is #6. The meeting is an open discussion, everyone can speak up his/her idea in how to approach it and build up a community, with the balance among the resources->the needy-->God's will. Guiding by the Spirit, let's be (not only work) together to build a house of God, a community of brethren-hood in communion with the Risen Jesus, who is our big brother.
Time --> 4: 30 PM, Jun. 3, after Chinese Mass
Place --> Lower Church--> small room.
Li-peng and I will be the knick out coordinator in the initiative stage in order to group all the Zeal and Pasion together, however after this meeting, it depends how we are going to proceed in the future, and who will be the coordinator for each sub-theme.
Please pray for the gathering, ask God's grace to lead us. Thank you for your support, and see you in Jun. 3.
An useful link for your info.

God Bless !
